I make one off designs for commission and also pieces for exhibitions and galleries.
Initially I like to meet with the customer to discuss their requirement and ideas, ideally in the client’s house/office where the piece will be situated. In Covid times you may prefer to meet online with Zoom or Skype etc..
We generally start the design process with pencil sketches getting lots of inspiration from the customer, books, pictures, the web and our surroundings. Once ideas start to take shape, then I commit the design to 3D software on the computer so that the piece can be simulated in the customer’s home or environment and realistic images can be shared in person or on-line screen sharing.
I will also often make full size cardboard mock-ups of the piece or elements of it such as patterns or handles so that we get a real tactile feel before committing to the commission.
Above a final realist design for a customer created on the computer and below the completed commission..
