All projects start with lots of Pencil Sketches

I make one off designs for sale at exhibitions and I also make pieces for commission.

The Commissioning Process

Initially I like to meet with the customer to discuss their requirement and ideas, ideally in the client’s house/office where the piece will be situated. We generally start the design process with pencil sketches getting lots of inspiration from the customer, books, pictures, the web and our surroundings. Once ideas start to take shape, then I commit the design to 3D software on the computer so that the piece can be simulated in the customer’s home or environment and realistic images can be shared in person or on-line via Skype screen sharing.

I have recently made a Games table,, the brief was for a pedestal table with enough room for wines glasses to be placed around the chess board! The drawers  have compartments to fit the clients chess pieces.

The Games Table was simulated in the client’s house during the design process

A realistic rendered image of the games table gives my clients a very good idea of the finished piece

Completed table came out very similar to the client design brief and images

I will also often make mock-ups of elements; such as patterns or handles so that we get a real tactile feel before committing to  the commission.
